Create a Web Page

A web page can be created using many different techniques. Web authoring programs like DreamWeaver or FrontPage can be used to create a site using a graphical interface and do not require html coding skills. Text editors like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Macinthosh can be used to create an html file but require some basic knowledge of html coding.

 

Using the U-System, you can have a basic personal homepage set up for you automatically. The system will create the necessary folder on the web server, create a basic index.html file and set file permissions to make the site viewable over the internet. You can later edit or overwrite this basic web page.

 

Requirement: You must already have a NetID and a U-System Account.

 

Once you have a U-System account established, you need to download the software necessary to connect to your account. See:

 

Once connected to the U-System, follow the directions below to set up a default homepage.

 

  • The U-System will display in one of two options: Menu or Shell. If you see only a command prompt, type: menu to enter the Menu option. Otherwise, you will be presented with three options:

  • Select "M" to enter the Menu Option.
  • A "Welcome to the Menu.U.Arizona.edu" message will display providing several additional options.
  • Use your arrow button to move down and select the option:
          Misc --------- Miscellaneous (Home Page, Password, Signature)

  • Select:
          Home Page ---- Create Your Own WWW Home Page
  • The U-System will create a public_html folder, create a basic index.html file, and set file permissions for you.

Viewing Your Personal Homepage

  • Your website will now be viewable within a web browser at:

          http://www.u.arizona.edu/~username

    Replace "username" above with your own username.
  • You should see your basic personal homepage, similar to:
