Hardware

See the Hardware page for details on the CPU, disks, tapes, printers, and their configuration. (The hardware can be dynamically reconfigured and shifted between Test and Production so the exact hardware allocations may differ.)

The hardware has been split into two "Logical PARtitions":

  • LPAR1 is allocated to Production work
  • LPAR2 is the Test system

Some z/OS surprises

  • z/OS runs a POSIX-compliant UNIX on both LPAR1 and LPAR2 called Unix Systems Services or USS.
  • The LPAR2 Test environment supports the entire CICS and IDMS test systems and can be tailored to test the majority of functions of the Production system prior to systems and applications enhancements being moved into production.
  • z/OS is capable of being a Web server.
  • z/OS can run Linux in a third LPAR.
