The e-mail system resides on a different server than the U-System. Since the two systems are linked, you can still view your messages in existing folders on the U-System using Pine, and you can also view new messages in your INBOX, regardless of whether the new messages were sent to username@u.arizona.edu or username@email.arizona.edu. However, if you want to view messages in your existing folders using WebMail, you must move the messages to new folders on the email.arizona.edu system. This is a fairly simple process using Pine, as detailed below. Although simple, the procedure is a little tedious because you can only move one folder at a time. Of course, you only need to move the folders containing messages you want to keep. After moving the desired folders, delete all the folders you no longer need (you can't delete your INBOX).
E-mail clients using POP can only download messages in the INBOX, so if you want to view your folders on the server using anything other than Pine, you must use the web client or change the set up of your e-mail client to use IMAP instead of POP. (By the way, Pine does, in fact, use IMAP to view your folders.) Use the following steps to move your e-mail messages from existing U-System folders to the e-mail system. Although single-letter commands used below are shown in upper case, you can type them in lower case if you prefer.
Procedures
- Using Pine, go to one of your folders and view the Message Index (list of messages in the folder)
- Press ; (the semi-colon key to activate the Select command)
- At the SELECT criteria: prompt, press A (select All)
- Press A (Apply)
- At the APPLY command: prompt, press S (Save)
- At the SAVE __ msgs to folder in <Mail> [saved-messages] : prompt, hold the Ctrl key and press N (^N=Next Collection)
- At the SAVE to folder in <Mail on username.inbox.ema> [saved-messages] : prompt, type the name of the new folder and press Enter (NOTE: the new folder does not need to have the same name as the existing folder)
- At the Folder "FOLDERNAME" in <Mail on username...> doesn't exist. Create? prompt, press Y (Yes, to create the folder on the system) NOTE: wait a few seconds for the [Busy <|> ] message to go away and the [__ messages saved and deleted] message to appear on the screen.
- After the messages have been moved, press the comma key (which does the same thing as the less-than key) to return to the Folder List
- With the highlight still on the name of the folder just moved, press D (Delete)
- At the DELETE "FOLDERNAME" (the currently open folder)? prompt, press Y (Yes)
- Repeat all the above steps for each folder you want to move (Make sure you are looking at the list of messages in a folder, NOT the list of folder names when you begin again.)
