PPP is a service that allows you to browse the web, use email and other services on the world-wide network from your home computer.
Various vendors provide PPP (point to point protocol) dial up Internet service to University of Arizona Students, Staff, and Faculty. This protocol allows you to access certain items from the Internet that you could not use before from the comfort of your own home. PPP accounts can only be accessed from off campus telephone lines.
Frame Relay is a service designed for groups located at off campus sites. This service provides data network connections only and is very cost effective. Frame Relay requires a substantial investment in electronic hardware for implementation and operation. The primary advantage to using Frame Relay is that it is generally less costly than a dedicated circuit while still providing a quality network connection. Frame Relay fully supports access to UANet and the WWW/Internet.
In addition to installation and equipment costs, there are monthly charges for Frame Relay service.
T-1 is a service designed to support large groups at off campus locations. T-1's are dedicated circuits that have the potential for carrying data, telephone or video traffic, depending upon the equipment used and circuit configuration.
As a data network connection, T-1 provides high speed, high capacity reliable access to the UANet. T-1 is also the most expensive service to install and the monthly charges increase with distance from the campus. Substantial investment in electronic hardware is needed for implementation and operation.
56 KBs is a dedicated service designed to support small to medium size groups at off campus locations. The 56 KBs is essentially a scaled-down version of the T-1, but still provides a high-quality, reliable connection to the UANet. As with T-1 and Frame Relay, a substantial investment in electronic hardware is required for implementation and operation.
Monthly charges increase with distance from the campus.
Qwest DSL may be used for connectivity to support qualified off campus locations. The UofA functions as the Internet Service Provider (ISP). This service offers no email or web storage.
